15 years Bars & Profiles - A conversation with Jef, Yves and Wim

How "the seniors" witnessed the department's growth into what it is today

What began as a small-scale department has, over the past 15 years, grown into a fully-fledged production unit filled with expertise and innovation. Jef Baelus (Shift Supervisor), Yves Torfs (Process Specialist & NPD), and Wim Sels (Assistant Shift Supervisor) are three colleagues who have witnessed this transformation up close. They share their experiences and insights on how Bars & Profiles has evolved into an indispensable part of Aurubis Olen.

How it all began

In 2010, Bars & Profiles took its first steps in Olen. Yves, who has been with Aurubis since 2006, vividly remembers that time: “The department started small, with five colleagues and just one hall. Everything was new: the machines, the products, the processes.”

Jef, who started as an operator in 2010, also saw the department grow firsthand. “There were five of us working in a day shift. Today, Bars & Profiles has over 50 colleagues, spread across three shifts, a dedicated day shift, its own maintenance team, and an office team.”

Wim, who joined in 2013, highlights how unique it was to be part of a growing department: “What’s great about our team is the diversity of backgrounds—everything from chefs to gym teachers. That diversity brings a special dynamic.”

From start-up to a solid player

The past 15 years have seen major changes, particularly in safety and efficiency. “In the early days, the focus was mainly on keeping the machines running,” says Yves. “Now, we have clear procedures and routines, which enable us to handle larger production runs.” While the department used to process small orders of 500 kg, orders of 100 tons are now common.

Bars & Profiles also offers more complex products today. Yves explains: “Since acquiring the machines from Aurubis Switzerland in 2011, we’ve gained the know-how and equipment to produce specialized profiles. That really took us to the next level.”

The workshop itself has also grown. What started with one hall has expanded to three. Jef adds: “The extra space allows us to work more efficiently and respond better to customer demand.”

The key to success: a strong team

The strength of Bars & Profiles lies in its team. Wim emphasizes: “You’re never on your own. Whether it’s solving a technical problem or handling a busy shift, you can count on your colleagues.”

Jef points to the many growth opportunities within the department: “There’s a lot you can achieve here. Colleagues move up to roles in planning or technical support. That’s motivating and keeps the work interesting.”

Proud of the past, ready for the future

The pride is evident in all three. Wim reflects with a smile on what has been achieved: “It’s been quite an adventure, but what we’ve built is impressive.” Yves concludes: “We’ve grown from a small project to a thriving department that constantly seeks improvement. The future? It looks very promising.”
