Tell us about yourself...
I am Eduard Stefanov, Head of Technologies and Quality at Aurubis Bulgaria. I love my job. I have various hobbies—one is chemistry, which connects me to my professional life, and the other is trams and trains. Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by chemistry, and yes—I was one of those kids with a lab in the attic. I graduated from the National High School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Inorganic Substances from the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM). Recently, I obtained my Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. I first stepped into Aurubis in 2014 as part of the Summer Internship Program. At that time I had to choose between a 325-meter-tall stack or the 324-meter Eiffel Tower, where I had an Erasmus internship offer. Clearly, I chose Aurubis by a one-meter margin. After two internships, I started working in early 2016 as a Research and Development Engineer in the R&D department. I worked on various projects with colleagues from both Bulgaria and Europe. In the warm and colorful autumn of 2019, I shifted roles within Aurubis and have since been an integral part of the Analytical Laboratories as the Head of Technologies and Quality there.

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?
Curious, determined, lucky. -
What did you dream of when you were young, and what did you want to become when you grew up?
As a child, I wanted to be a chemist. It was a dream I pursued consistently.

How and when did your career at Aurubis Bulgaria begin?
In 2014, with the Summer Internship Program—a one-month joint internship in the R&D and Process Control departments, later extended by another month in R&D and Analytical Laboratories. -
Why did you choose Aurubis Bulgaria, and what do you value in the organization?
I chose Aurubis because I wanted to put all my theoretical knowledge into practice. The company is pragmatic and quick to make decisions about innovations. I always feel my contribution to the organization and its processes. In my roles so far, I’ve enjoyed the sense of discovery and turning ideas from abstract to tangible. It’s gratifying to feel the recognition of your colleagues, as well as to receive support and have the solid backing of Aurubis.

What is your role in the company now, and what brings you the most satisfaction?
My role is to ensure, through the knowledge and skills of my team, the perfect methods for analyzing all materials we handle at Aurubis. I focus on having well-trained professionals in the lab and continually improving quality.

What are you like, and what do you enjoy outside of Aurubis Bulgaria?
I love exploring new places, whether in Bulgaria or abroad. Outside work, I spend dedicated time to various interests or to meetings with friends. My wildest adventures happen with friends during travels. A vivid memory of mine is one with a train trip to Prague with a friend, where we went just to ride trams nonstop around the city. -
How do you see your future in the company and beyond? What do you dream o?
I imagine my workplace even more modern and envision Aurubis Bulgaria’s laboratory setting the standard in metallurgical analysis worldwide. I dream of having more free time in my personal life to conquer some personal goals. -

What would you say to your colleagues at Aurubis Bulgaria?
Positivity and dreams open new horizons, but critical thinking allows us to improve. Always reflect on yourself and ask, "What did I contribute to make this company better?".
