Meet Teun! He started in Contirod production in 2017 and two years later he progressed to Process Specialist ROD. He keeps a close eye on the process and directs where necessary.

  • Teun Stessens
  • 33 years old
  • Process Specialist ROD
  • Working at Aurubis Olen since April 2017
  • Who are you? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I started working in construction. Those working hours combined with a family did not see fit for me. My cousin worked at Contirod and advised me to apply for a job at Aurubis. And so I started here in 2017 in production at Contirod. There, I worked in shifts for two years. In 2019, I was in the course of becoming a foreman when they were looking for a new process technologist. I was asked if I was interested, and then I took the opportunity and applied for it. And with success: for the past two years, in addition to Process Specialist, I have also been Day Shift Coordinator.

  • What does a typical working day look like for you?
We always start with the daily meeting. My working day often looks different. Depending on how production is running, is how my day will look. If there are production problems, we first look for solutions and delve into the cause. We also take care of the maintenance of the rollers. We make casting belts, casting chains for the casting machine, ... and make sure everything is ready for the next casting. I keep a close eye on the process and make adjustments where necessary. Moreover, I ensure that all supplies for the process are always supplied.

I am also Contirod's "linking pin" for Health & Safety. Every month the linking pins from various departments meet to discuss safety topics. By doing so, we want to learn from each other and optimise safety in each department.

  • Why do you like working at Aurubis?
It is close to home which allows me to come to work by bike. I also have flexible hours and the work-life balance is good. There are many career opportunities. In a short time, I was able to seriously grow myself. In other words: the total package is great and it is pleasant to work here!

  • What specific skills do you need to have in your job?
You need to be able to deal with people and, above all, to look, listen and interpret well. Technical knowledge is necessary, but it is mainly learning on the job. Common sense is often enough and you don't always have to look far for solutions.

  • How would you describe your colleagues?
It's a fun bunch. Every man for himself? We don't know that. You can always approach anyone. What's important is that we can respond to each other. I regularly come into contact with everyone in our department. In addition, we are also becoming closer across departments.

  • Who are you besides work?
I have three children aged 6, 4 and 2. The two oldest are boys and the youngest is a girl. Occasionally I play tennis to relax.

  • How has Aurubis Olen evolved in the five years you have been working here?
Since I have been working here, safety procedures have evolved positively. There are more measures and there is more focus on working safely. You can fall back on instructions and procedures that changed along with everything else. That trend brought a positive change in mentality: we hold each other accountable for safety and look out for each other. Safety comes first.

I also see an evolution in training. Your training schedule is well monitored so that you can develop your qualities optimally.

  • Do you have any tips for potential colleagues?
Don't hesitate to take the step. Don't be intimidated by the word 'factory': there is no band work here. You get a varied job and on top of that, lots of extra benefits.
