Education and safety go hand in hand at Aurubis Beerse. On the International Day of Education, our colleague Christof, H&S Trainer, shares how he contributes to a safe and well-trained workplace.

What does your job as an H&S Trainer entail?
I provide training for the various machines our colleagues work with, such as aerial work platforms, overhead cranes, trucks, etc. I teach them the basic principles and make them aware of the risks so they can work safely with the machines. Each training starts with theory, followed by practical exercises. Then, the knowledge is further applied on the work floor, under the supervision of the manager. -
Why are trainings so important for safety?
Trainings ensure that our colleagues work more efficiently and, above all, more safely. Correctly using machines and recognizing risks are crucial to preventing accidents. Safety is a continuous process. You learn something new every day. That's why it's important to regularly refresh and keep improving yourself. -
What tools do you use to make your training interactive and effective?
In addition to presentations and videos, I work with practical examples, such as hooks, harnesses, and other materials. In the practical exercises, we simulate real work situations to make it as realistic and relevant as possible. For example, forklift training varies greatly depending on the colleague's role: from retrieving pallets from the warehouse to moving lead blocks or anode plates. This makes the training both educational and engaging. -
What motivates you in your work?
It gives me great satisfaction to see colleagues grow. When I notice that they go to work confidently and with the right knowledge and necessary skills after training, I am also satisfied. I continuously adjust my training to meet the needs of our colleagues. I also keep educating myself to make the training as high-quality as possible. -
Finally, do you have a safety message for your colleagues?
Safe working always starts with yourself! Be aware of what you are doing and do not take unnecessary risks. When performing a task, always do it with focus and care for your own safety and that of others.
