Meet André! As Admin & Trainer Materials Handling, he ensures that (new) colleagues can quickly and safely get up to speed.

  • André Verstricht
  • 60 years old
  • Admin & Trainer Materials Handling
  • Working at Aurubis Beerse since April 1982
  • André, could you tell us how you started at Aurubis Beerse?
My father worked at Aurubis Beerse in the Utilities & Facilities team. Through him, I got to know the company and started as an operator in Sampling in April 1982. After five years, I moved to the Lead Tin team, where I worked as an operator in a continuous system for twenty years. Then I joined the Materials Handling Team and, after a few years, grew into the role of foreman. For the past two years, I have been working as Admin & Trainer Materials Handling.

  • What exactly does your job as Admin & Trainer in Materials Handling entail?
I am responsible for training (new) colleagues within our Materials Handling team. During the onboarding process, I guide them step by step through the logistics processes, interdepartmental collaboration, and safety regulations. For the first two weeks, I take them under my wing so they can start well-prepared and safely. We explore the site, review and learn about the different materials, and get to know the teams. In addition to training, I also handle administrative tasks, such as keeping instruction cards and instruction sheets up to date and creating new ones. This is an ongoing process because safety never stops. There are always improvements to be made to make the work even safer.

  • What does a typical workday look like for you?
My day starts with following up on machine control sheets. If there is a defect, I ensure a work order is created. Then I work on updating and adjusting instruction sheets and instruction cards. I am also involved in implementing the training plan: I conduct training sessions and follow up individually with colleagues. Additionally, I try to do a daily round on "the yard" (the scrap yard) to check safety and operations and stay in touch with the colleagues.

  • You have been working at Aurubis Beerse for almost 43 years. How have you seen the company evolve?
In terms of safety, we have made significant progress. A good example is our new work clothing, which meets the latest safety standards and provides better protection, visibility, and thus better safety. There have also been many changes in terms of personnel. When I started, there were about 200 colleagues, and everyone knew each other. Now we have more than 500 employees, and new faces join us every week.

  • What do you like most about your job?
Without a doubt, the team! A good atmosphere and great colleagues make a big difference. I also enjoy staying in contact with colleagues in the field. This way, I remain involved in what is happening within the company.

  • Is there a project you are particularly proud of?
A few years ago, I optimized the layout of the storage areas. Previously, the location of materials was decided on the spot with each delivery, without a fixed structure. I developed a clear layout so that we now know exactly where each material is located. This makes the work much more efficient and organized.

  • What do you do in your free time?
Traveling, making music, and reading are my biggest passions. I have been playing bass guitar and saxophone since I was young and used to play in a band. Additionally, I have traveled extensively. My favorite destination? Without a doubt, Myanmar!
