Sustainability management

Aurubis follows the corporate mission: responsibly creating value from raw materials with metals for an innovative and sustainable world. Our understanding of sustainability includes the focus on the economy, the environment and people.

Sustainability at Aurubis means:
  • treating the environment and limited natural resources with care.
  • maintaining a trusting relationship with employees, suppliers, customers and neighbors.
  • securing long-term corporate success with responsible business practices and solid growth.

One of the fundamental tasks of our sustainability management is to anchor Aurubis' sustainability approach in corporate practice and to take the concerns of our stakeholders into account appropriately. Aurubis employees should be committed to implementing the agreed measures and targets.

The legal framework, our corporate values and our internal guidelines form the basis for ensuring that we act in accordance with the law, treat each other and our business partners fairly and trustingly and use resources carefully. The precautionary principle practiced at Aurubis is an elementary component of responsible business practices and long-term success.

In order to better reflect our own sustainability ambitions and the increasing importance of sustainable business practices in legislation and the market, the realignment of the Aurubis sustainability organization was decided in the 2020/21 strategy process. As a result, an independent Sustainability department was created in January 2022 and its staff was strengthened. The head of the Sustainability department reports directly to the CEO, who has overall responsibility for sustainability in the Aurubis Group. This also includes responsibility for sustainability aspects in the corporate strategy, objectives and guidelines as well as for sustainability reporting. The first Sustainability Guideline, which defines responsibilities, tasks and processes, among other things, came into force in February 2023.

The Group department has three work areas:

ESG-Management and Reporting: Responsibility for sustainability reporting and for coordinating the questionnaires for sustainability ratings (e.g. EcoVadis, MCSI, CDP). At the same time, it is responsible for further developing the sustainability targets, reviewing them on an ongoing basis and supporting the operational implementation of the measures together with the specialist departments and locations.

Responsible Sourcing: Responsible for assessing suppliers' compliance with our human rights requirements, in accordance with applicable laws and industry requirements. The unit also provides technical support to Group departments and sites in preparing for Copper Mark certification.

Decarbonization: Responsible for developing and managing the decarbonization strategy, targets and roadmaps as well as the climate transition plan. To ensure a targeted and systematic approach, the department supports the locations in the development and implementation of the relevant projects and organizes the exchange of experience and the identification of best practice approaches.

The entire Sustainability department forms the interface between the specialist departments relevant to the topic and coordinates all related processes within the Group.
