Apprenticeship kick-off at Aurubis: Optimal learning conditions in an industry full of promise

The new class of apprentices is kicking off their professional lives at the Hamburg site of multimetal provider Aurubis. This year, Hamburg Senator of Economics and Innovation Dr. Melanie Leonhard, together with Aurubis CEO Roland Harings, welcomed all of the new apprentices.
Senator of Economics and Innovation Dr. Melanie Leonhard:

“Aurubis is an innovative and important employer that offers apprentices a modern training concept and a variety of occupations. The company produces metals that serve as the foundation for electric vehicles and the production of renewable energies, for example. We wish the apprentices all the best for a successful start.”

This year, 78 people are beginning their training at the Aurubis plant in Hamburg. Aurubis, a remarkably efficient and sustainable smelter network, trains its future specialists in a total of 13 occupations as well as in dual work/study programs. Furthermore, together with the neighboring secondary school in the Veddel district, the multimetal company is once again offering young people the opportunity to start their careers with an entry-level vocational qualification in the area of metals and chemicals through the apprenticeship preparation program 10-Plus.

Aurubis AG CEO and Labor Director Roland Harings emphasized the forward-looking industry the apprentices are starting their career paths in during his welcome speech:

“You have made the right decision and chosen an apprenticeship in a company that is a key enabler of the big megatrends of this era. After all, the metals from Aurubis make the energy transition, the mobility shift, and digitalization possible in the first place. Your work here can contribute to this societal progress in the future.”

Aurubis Hamburg Plant Manager Michael Jordan: “Once again, we were able to fill all 78 apprenticeship spots. Demand for these spots was strong. In times of a specialist shortage, this can’t be taken for granted, and it shows us that our training concept is an appealing offer. On top of that, it makes us proud that over 85 % of apprenticeship graduates over the past ten years have decided to continue working for Aurubis.”

As Hamburg’s second largest industrial training provider, Aurubis is again demonstrating its continuous dedication to highly trained young workers. The multimetal provider makes ongoing investments in a modern, forward-looking learning environment: This is evident from the Innovation and Training Center (IAZ) in Hamburg, which opened in 2019 and includes flexibly designed rooms for group work, studying, and working that create individual conditions for optimal learning. In addition, Aurubis continues to develop its training concept to adapt to constantly changing demands. This includes using the advantages of a modern, digital working and learning environment to transfer knowledge in a way that generates profit.

In Lünen, located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, 14 people are starting apprenticeships at Aurubis’ German recycling site as well. There, Aurubis offers seven different apprenticeship occupations and is one of the largest training companies in the region.
